Porcelain patio installed in Heathfield, East Sussex

A Patio That Won't
Sink, Crack or Shift.

Most patio problems come from one place: a bad base. Slabs installed directly onto sand, insufficient depth, no proper falls for drainage — these shortcuts look fine on day one and cause problems for years.

Field Groundworks Ltd does it right. Every patio we install in Heathfield and across East Sussex starts with a correctly excavated, compacted, and graded sub-base. The slabs on top are a reflection of the work underneath.

  • Full excavation to correct depth — no shortcuts
  • Compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base
  • Correct falls designed in from the start
  • Porcelain, natural stone or block paving
  • Pointing options: dry joint, brush-in or mortar
  • Integrated drainage channels where required

Paving Materials We
Supply & Install

We advise on the most suitable material for your budget, property style and usage. Samples and portfolio available on your free site visit.

Porcelain Paving

The most popular choice for modern East Sussex homes. Ultra-low maintenance, frost resistant, non-porous and available in large format slabs. Stunning results with minimal upkeep.

🪨

Natural Stone

Sandstone, limestone and granite paving — timeless, full of character. Each slab is unique. Well suited to period properties and garden settings throughout East Sussex.

🧱

Block Paving

Versatile, durable and cost-effective. Block paving works brilliantly for patios, driveways and paths. Pattern and colour options to suit every property style.

🔷

Concrete Paving

Concrete flags offer the look of natural stone at a more accessible price point. Consistent finish, good slip resistance, hard wearing.

🚧

Edging & Kerbing

Crisp, defined borders elevate any patio or driveway. We install block and concrete edging, kerb restraints and bespoke borders to complete the look.

Patio Drainage

No patio is complete without proper drainage. We install linear channel drainage, gullies and soakaways as part of every new patio installation.

FAQs

Porcelain is by far the most popular in East Sussex right now — frost resistant, non-porous and incredibly low maintenance. Natural sandstone or limestone suits period properties beautifully. We can talk through suitable options for your property and budget during your free site visit.

For a standard patio, you need a minimum of 100–150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base beneath a mortar or slurry bed. Many failed patios have inadequate bases — we excavate and prepare to the correct depth every time.

In most cases, no planning permission is needed for a standard garden patio. If you live in a listed building or conservation area, additional checks may be required. We can point out any concerns during the site visit.

A typical garden patio takes 2–4 days depending on size, material choice and ground conditions. We give you a clear programme at the quote stage so you know what to expect — no vague timelines.

Yes. We handle full break-out and removal of existing patios, concrete slabs and block paving as part of our service. All spoil is removed from site — no skips left on your drive for weeks.
